Top 3 Things You Need Before Starting A Blog

Hi lovelies! I hope your Monday is off to a great start. If there’s one question I get a lot, it’s how I started my blog. Despite popular belief, starting a blog takes a lot of work and research. You have to have a solid plan before just diving straight into the execution phase. Now, when I started I definitely didn’t have a solid plan. I didn’t even know where I wanted my blog to go. I just knew I enjoyed writing and having an outlet to express myself. I also knew that I was passionate about beauty and fashion, along with loving the ability to motivate and inspire my peers. There birth The Britney Diaries! Keep reading for the top three things you need to kick-start your blog.

What are you passionate about?

One of the problems that I see with bloggers is that everyone is trying to be an expert in EVERYTHING. Another problem I see is that everyone is wanting to start a blog without even having a passion behind it – they’re just looking at the perks. Well, if neither of those are you, then great! Ask yourself these questions:

  1. What do I like to do?
  2. What can I talk on and on about without getting tired?
  3. What do I feel is lacking in the blogging community? What topics need more attention?

If you can answer these questions, then congrats! You’re narrowing down your niche – which is going to be the foundation of your blog.

What will your name be?

Figuring out your platform’s name is more difficult than you think. It took me forever to figure out what I wanted to call my blog. I eventually stopped thinking about it so hard, and while watching the new spin off series of Sex In The City called “The Carries Diaries” it came to me! Why don’t I just call it The Britney Diaries? At the time, I had a strong obsession with “Carrie Bradshaw” with dreams of moving to NYC. It was perfect.  Think about what aligns with your lifestyle the most. What inspires you? What name can you see sticking with you longterm? Although this process is tough, it is SO rewarding when you have that moment where you feel like things are going in the right direction!

Who will your audience be?

I think the problem for me was again, I was trying to be everything to everyone. I wanted everyone to read my blog, but unfortunately this isn’t going to happen. I finally analyzed my audience and saw that most of my blog posts resonate with millennials. Though this took a while to understand, it really helped me to know how to gage my content when I’m thinking of topics for the week. Ask yourself the below questions:

  1. Who do I wanted to impact?
  2. Who is the audience for some of my favorite blogs?
  3. What kind of content am I looking to produce? Who is normally the audience for this type of content?

Now, these are just the few steps to starting your blog, but there’s so much more to do! I hope these three steps have helped you think about your blogging process. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below, and if you feel like I should start a blogging series let me know as well!
