Hi beauties! It’s finally Friday, and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who’s happy for the weekend. Anyways, I attented the Okreal and Lou & Grey hosted panel with Nikki Ogunnaike, Fashion Features Director at Elle.com and Sarah Levey, Co-founder of Y7 Studio last night, and it was AMAZING. It was 45 minutes of straight inspiration – from when they started their careers, to what they’re day-to-day currently looks like, the girl bosses dished it all. One thing (out of the many) that made me sit back and think about life was when Nikki mentioned how she wanted to become a director by the age of thirty, but didn’t reach that goal until thirty-one.
Being five years away from the big 3-0 really makes you think about life – a lot. Listening to the both of them chat about their journeys in their industries really got me thinking about my own journey. It made me ask myself some hard, but needed questions.
- Am I where I thought I would be by now?
- What goals did I have on my list five years ago that I haven’t completed?
- What’s stopping me from reaching my full potential?
- Am I putting forth 100% or am I slacking?
SOOO many thoughts and questions – the list goes on and on. But then I had another thought: is it really the end of the world if I don’t fully blossom into my potential until 35? Why is it that the older we get, the more limitations we place on ourselves and our success? I didn’t even realize I was a victim of that until last night. Thinking about all of those things and putting them into perspective really helped me curate three reasons as to why deadlines are WACK. Keep reading to find out!
Reason #1: Things change constantly, and so should you!
Girl, we would like to think that everything was under our control, but the truth of the matter is that it’s not. Things are always changing. We are always evolving. That idea you had two years ago might not be the same thing you want currently. As you grow, your ideas and goals will grow as well. Don’t feel like you have to stick to the things that you’ve outgrown to stay true to yourself.
Reason #2: Let things play out exactly how they’re supposed to.
WOW – this goes back to the whole control thing. I have realized that I spend so much time trying to control my outcome rather than doing all I can in the moment to even see an outcome. Focus on what needs to be done, and the results will follow you. You won’t have to chase them down – it’ll be clear as day. This will be when you’ll understand the phrase “everything happens for a reason”.
Reason #3: Have you learned everything to take you to the next level?
So often we place these age limitations on ourselves, but we don’t even look back to see if it’s even feasible anymore. Five years ago I didn’t think that one day I would just decide to move to New York, but fast-forward at the age of twenty-four I decided to pack up my bags and see what else was out there. Sure, I could’ve stayed in Chicago and continued to build my network, but I didn’t – and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Point being, sometimes the unexpected happens because God needs to elevate you to the next level. Maybe this might prolong your journey, but just think of how happy you’ll be when it all comes in full circle.
